Read only attributes always greyed

I have Windows XP professional SP 1. Every folder, when I
look at it in Windows Explorer, always has the Read-only
attribute grayed out when I select the folder properties.
What is the difference between a gray check in read-only
versus a black check? Why are folders created in XP with
the read-only attribute checked and grayed out?

This is normal and by design. The Read-Only attribute is greyed out to
indicate that this option is not available on folders.

For all practical purposes that setting has no effect on folders. They
are always open for reading/writing.
