True, but they all either don't apply to XP or they say to try the two
solutions I've already tried. Unless there's one of them I just happened to
miss, that avenue is exhausted. And none of them mention the 80010105
error.

There are a bunch of articles at support.microsoft.com if you search for

Phil Wilson [MVP Windows Installer]
message Any msi package I try to install on my XP SP1 machine is terminated with
this message:
"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur
if
you
are running Windows in safe mode, or if the windows Installer is not
correctly installed. Contact your support peronnel for assistance."
Sadly, I am the support personnel. I've made sure the registry
entries
are
correct and I've tried the /unregister /regserver gig, but to no avail.
I've uninstalled as many hotfixes as I can and have re-installed SP1. No
go. The only other clue is this in the event log:
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: MsiInstaller
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1015
Date: 6/26/2003
Time: 11:17:54 AM
User: N/A
Computer: SMELLY-IBM
Description:
Failed to connect to server. Error: 0x80010105
Windows Installer is great technology but there's a dearth of information
about how to fix it when it breaks.
