(Re)Start fails with usb external hard drives connected Win XP Svc

When I attept to start or restart my computer when any of my usb external
hard drives are connected, the system locks up in the "Windows is starting up
...." screen. The only way to get my computer to start is to disconnect the
devices and power off and on my computer. My drives are a Maxtor One Touch
and a Western Digital My Book 5000ys. This happens whether either one or
both are connected; if they are not connected, there are no problems
starting my computer.

Help!

Any suggestions?

I had the same problem with my 750 GB Seagate FreeAgent. I had to
return the drive and the replacement has worked perfectly. I think
there is a problem with USB drives over a certain size if the external
electronics aren't updated.

Hopefully this is not the problem, because my drives are a couple of years
old and are probably not returnable. I will contact the manufacturerers,
though, to see if they have any comments on this. Thanks, Mike!

Any particular reasons that the USB-Drives should be
connected on start up? Do you boot from it/them?

I for one plug mine in when I need them otherwise I'll leave
them disconnected.

The way my computer is set up it is a pain to connect and disconnect the
drive so I prefer to leave it plugged in. I also have my backup set to
run when I am not there so it needs to be plugged in before it starts.
Since the drive automatically powers down I am not too worried about it
wearing out before I would replace it anyway.

OK I see :)

Well for my older PC I got me a 2.0 USB PCI card, having
spend the money I didn't want the unit collecting dust, so I
stuck it into the new PC. It has a internal slot, and on
this I connected a cable (internally) and used a slot cover
to rigg up a usb-connector.

For other devices I use USB extension cables and don't have
troubles with it. I don't unplug the cable at the PC itself
but on the devices, which are scattered all around on the
Desktop. I don't think that it does matter on which end one
*unplugs* the units.

But back to the point, I just wonder if there is a driver
missing when the OS fires up, or some file-integrity check
tries to run on the USB-Drives? Have you checked them when
the OS is up and running?
