Re-installing XP Home

G

Guest

My PC at home was badly infected with a virus to the point that I could only
run in safe mode. I went to Trend-Micro to use their free virus scan to try
and deal with the virus (my already loaded virus scan was maded useless
somehow by the virus we were infected with) but this did not work.

Bottom line is that I tried to re-install XP Home, but to get to the point
that I could even get this re-install going, I had to uninstall SP2. Now my
re-install hangs up with the message "Procedure entry point GetIUMS could not
be reached in the dynamic library MSDART.DLL"

I now seem caught in a loop and no matter what I do to try and get back to
safe mode, I keep coming back to the XP installation process where it asks me
to re-insert the XP disk and eventually the same message I quoted above
reappears.

What have I done wrong and what do I do now?

This is caused by Windows XP improperly naming the msdart dll file.
Download (save) DARTFIX.BAT to your desktop and click on it. This will
make a copy of MSDART.DLL and name it MSDART32.DLL. It will be placed
in the Windows/System32 directory.

Error "MSDART32.DLL" missing

If you can still get into Safe Mode see if you have Windows Media Player 10
on your computer. If so, use Add/Remove Programs>Add/Remove Windows
Components to remove WMP10. This is a known issue that does occur during a
repair install of both Home and Pro.

Thanks for the advice, my problem right now is that I cannot get out of the
loop I seem to be in. The system keeps coming back to the re-install process
- I cannot get to desktop or anything else for that matter. Hitting "F8"
during a re-boot and picking any of the choices from the pick list does not
work, the system just grinds back to the re-intall process and the exact spot
where my re-install failed.

I would try these things but as I have said, I am locked in a loop here. I
have been at this for over 3 hours last night and 2 hours this morning and
nothing I due seems to work.

You have a service or startup task that needs msdart and unfortunately that
service/taks is being allowed to run during setup.

If you have a standard type of install media you should also have recovery
console available. What you'll need to use recovery console to disable that
service.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310602

See here for the default setting of MS services
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/.../proddocs/en-us/sys_srv_default_settings.mspx

Anything not listed is definitely fair game to disable, but it may be best
to try to set services to manual initially.

You don't perchance have a 3rd party firewall installed do you? Or 3rd party
DVD/CD burning? If so, those may be the first thing, as well as AV, to
disable.

Are you trying to reinstall over the top or blow the install away and start
from scratch?

Thank you everyone for your suggestions and comments. An odd thing happened,
I had left the XP Home disk in the PC right at the point where it had hung up
on the re-install and I just walked away from it. That's when I signed on
here asking for help.

I went back to the PC and the re-install had advanced while I was away from
it, and I have just finished the re-install and have now re-loaded SP2 as
well. I am now doing a virus scan to ensure the unit is clean.

I have seen threads mentioning a "clean install" or words to that effect.
Can someone explain what this term means? Thanks!

OK. I can, in hind sight, see that happening. A non-critical service/startup
task throwing a non-critical error would still allow setup to run. :-/

I have SQL Server installed on both my laptop and desktop. I have, twice due
to questionable decisions on my part with regard beta code, had to reinstall
on them one time each prior to SP2. In both instances I was not getting the
MSDart issue until post setup when firing up Office apps and/or SQL Server.
The fix in those instances was install SQL Server service packs. But
anyhooo...

Clean install involves blowing the contents of the drive away. Never
necessary unless you've had a really nasty trash of the OS image and if
that's the case, you're looking at figuring out how to salvage data off a
totally non-bootable system.

That means a reformat and complete installation from scratch. It also means
wiping out all programs and data on the drive in the process and replacing
it with a factory fresh copy of the operating system.

Thanks Colin.

Thanks Walter. Does returning to a "system restore" point delete files or
overwrite them or does it just somehow go back to a previous configuration
and continue operating?

Mike

System restore goes back to a previous configuration by restoring the
registry and certain monitored files as they were at some point in the past.
So yes, it will overwrite some files. It can delete executables depending on
their location.

Walter, The computer has xp pro but not a true copy of license (thanks to my
kid!).I wanted to install the correct way etc.., and the above is what
happens??Now I'm stuck ..

Ah. He can not be installed over Pro. You have to clean install which means
blowing the system partition away. If you haven't backed your data up, you
can try a parallel install.
See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316941 and for the specifics on a
parallel install look at the "Install Windows XP to a new folder" section.

I have been handed my recently deceased Father In law's computer by my Mother
in law to get up and running so she may use it for a computer class she wants
to take. The OEM Cd's are lost. On boot the screen shows . . .missing or
corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system . . . attempt repair by starting
Windows Setup using the original set-up CD-ROM

I have been on the phone with HP for hours trying to find a solution. The
OEM Cd's are no longer available from HP. My question is, if I buy a new copy
of XP Home will installing that overwrite the missing or corrupt OS files to
bring the system back to operation? My desire is to restore the system
without loosing data, stored photos and other things stored by my Father in
law. Will booting from a new copy XP Home, assuming the computer has no
existing damage other than corrupt OS files, restore the computer to its
"look and feel" before it became corrupted?
