Re-installation problems

I have a 160 GB HD partitioned into 5 partitions.
After a problem I am trying to re-install XP.
I want it to be on C.
I have screwed up the installation, as XP is now installed on E, and my
first Data partition is C.
Computer Management does not seem to let me change the present C to anything
else, as I hoped it would then let me change E to C.
What is now my best option?
I suspect that if I try a new install that I will not be able to install in
the empty partition and call it C, as that seemed to be where the problem
started on the last re-install.
I do have External HDs that I can transfer all the data to in the process if
necesssary.
Any help would be appreciated.

Your instincts are good - transfer the data to an external hard drive and
start over with a clean install.
