Re-install TCP/IP

Dan

For some reason my netword cards (wireless and wired) are not picking up a
DHCP address. I am getting an "Automatic Private Address" type. I have
removed and re-installed the NIC, but that did not fix the problem.

I guess my next step is to reinstall TCP/IP but I can't figure out how.

Here's the link to help you with reinstalling tcp/ip:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=299357 - How to Reset TCP/IP in
Windows XP

BUT before you do that, repost with more information about your network
setup. For instance, if you are using a router/wap, have you
power-cycled it and the cable/dsl modem? Have you checked the cables?
The problem might not lie with Windows, but since you haven't given any
details about your network, I can't guess at a solution for you.

Thanks Malke,

I have a SMC Cable/DSL wireless router. D-Link DWL-G630 wireless NIC pcmcia
adapter, and builtin Realtek ethernet adapter. Neither works in one of my
laptops. If I take the D-Link wireless and put it in another Identical
Laptop it works. ie picks up ip adress from DHCP on SMC Router. Take it out
and put it into the other PC (configured the same) and I get "Automatic
Private Address" type and can't access the internet.

I re-installed the drivers and still get nothing. The only difference in
the two pc on local area connection properties (on the one that doesn't
work) has McAfee Firewall Network filter (which I have unchecked) and some
other item that I uninstalled.

Does this help?

A few other things come to mind. First, the laptop cannot be configured
exactly the same or it would be working. On the laptop, try disabling
Windows Zero Configuration service. Here's a Knowledge Base article
that might be helpful, too.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=313242

If disabling the Windows Zero Configuration service doesn't work, then
make sure you haven't set your wireless router to only accept certain
MAC addresses and if you have, that you've got the laptop's MAC address
typed into the router's configuration correctly.

Make sure you are broadcasting the SSID and that you have that
information set correctly on the laptop. Make sure you have the laptop
set to the same wireless channel.

Post back after looking at those things if you need more help.

Just a note: I know we are focused on the wireless, but when I plug the
wired nic into either the router or a switch on my network (SBS2000) the
same thing happens on the wired connection.

Malke, Everything looks good according to the article. what next.

Well, Dan, this is one of those times that you're going to be best
served by having a professional come onsite and troubleshoot. Without
being able to actually see your computers, it's very hard to tell.
Maybe someone else reading this thread will have an "aha!" moment, but
I would really have to be there to go further. I'm sorry. Give a good
local shop a call. It probably can be sorted out very quickly with
hands-on.

Good luck,

Malke
