Try Ctrl+Shift+8 (which is what Ctrl+* really means).

Thanks SO much! That did the trick. Ok, I feel like an idiot, but where
exactly is that control in Outlook 2007? Where's the menu item? I looked and
looked and looked...

And was I supposed to know that Ctrl+* means Ctrl+Shift+8? I've never seen a
tool-tip that says one keyboard command and it really means another.

Thanks Sue...you're a lifesaver!

It's not a different command at all. To make an asterisk, you hold down the Shift key and press 8.

The button to toggle it on and off is on the Format Text tab of the ribbon.

the * is the SHIFT function of the 8 on US layout of keyboards. Annoyingly
more of those key combo's are being "translated" wrong.

The ¶ is located on the Format Text tab in the Paragraph section.

Except that the numeric keypad has a * on it and Control-* using the numeric
keypad *doesn't* do the same thing as Control-Shift-8, so I can see how
there could be some confusion.

Where does Word say that it should be Control-*? Could that be a
localization issue? What language Office do you have installed vs the
keyboard layout?

The Tooltip says CTRL+*. Changing the keyboard layout to Dutch doesn't
affect the Tooltip but Shift+8 now has turned into a ( and still toggles the
option.

The numeric keypad doesn't work as the actual key command behind it is
different then CTRL+SHIFT+8.

You know, that sounds broken in so many ways I can't even figure where I
would start to figure out if it *was* broken. =)

Right, which is why you can enter extended characters only using the numeric
keypad and not the main keyboard, but, you gotta admit, if something says
'Ctrl+*', it's pretty logical to think of using the numeric keypad.

Yup, and the simple fix is to mention CTRL+SHIFT+8 in the Tooltip instead.
Then it is clear for all keyboards and removes the numeric * confusion.

They really do stuff the hard way sometimes ;-)

LOL. I guess I learned multiplication as a dot, not an asterisk and "see" the numeric keypad key asterisk as a dot, not as a Shift+8

It is actually a localization thing, but a correct one. I use a Japanese
keyboard, and this layout has the '(' [open parenthesis] on the '8' key.
I use English Office, and Word Help indicates to use 'Ctrl+(' to
show/hide ¶.

I really think Help & tooltip should show Ctrl+Shift+8 to end the
confusion. But then again there is the Numeric Keypad issue...
