Re-establishing Negtowrk Connections

A question on re-establishing Network connections at logon:

Unlike Win2k, win98, etc , the default configuration for XP
Home seems to be that it either does not try to reestablish network
connections. That is, when you log on, even with the network cable
disconnected or servers down, XP does not tell you that it can't
reestablish a permanent connection. It's ready to set up the
connection, but it does not actually "hit" it.

A problem arises in that if you go to use those connections, some
programs will not wait for the connection to reestablish and go belly
up or worse. I have to go in an manually access the drive in a folder
view to make the connection active first before using those programs.

Is there some way to get XP to actually redo those connections at
login ? I don't mind waiting for a longer login time or responding to
error messages a la WIn2K - in fact, if the drives don't hook up, I
_want_ error messages.

Thanks,

Are you on a domain? If so, you ought to be using a central login script
anyway. But see

possible help.

This is a Workgroup, no domain, standalone win2K server, user/pass
accounts on server that clients have matching user/pass for.

That document looks like it will help to tune the server end... do you
know if there is something similar for the XP end ? That is, this
problem seems to be with the XP client not even really establishing
the connection initially. Is my situation unique on the XP end or is
this part of the"faster login" of XP i.e. they removed the "real"
drive hookup to speed startup and login ?

Thanks,
