re; Disk defragnmenter makes my computer shut down

Has anyone experienced the problem of running disk
defragmenter on Windows XP, only to have the computer
shut itself down repeatedly. Only system restore to a
time before running defrag will help. But Ultimately, i
badly need to defragment my hard disk.

First,make sure screen saver is off.>Do disk cleanup
first,all options except "compress old files",> then
error check hard drive my computer,rt click hard drive
properties tools error check.>Then after this,reboot in
safe mode(tap F8 key at start up)and do defrag from
there...Good luck.
