You cant just "clear" the area you need to actually delete the entire rows and
entire columns in question.

Go to the last true active cell of your data, select all columns to the right of
this, delete column. Save. Close file, reopen

Thank you Lady Layla. That actually worked. I deleted every column until
the complete end of the worksheet, then every row to the very (bitter?) end,
saved the worksheet and it let me then add a column. Finally, yeaah!

Do you know what it is that causes this, or is it just a bug?

I have found it happening if I accidently hit END and go all the way to the
right or bottom and either enter a # then clear it or if I am formatting cells
and inadvertantly format the entire row or entire column.

Excel should be more proactive on clearing cells, but if you just clear contents
you are not clearing formatting etc.

Glad it worked for you!
