RDC Disconnects After 10 mins

S

Sympatico News

Hi. Sorry if this has been asked already; I've looked and can't find a
reference.

Simply put, XP Pro RDC connects desktop and laptop on my home LAN without a
hitch (it sees, it, it connects, and I have full access at 54 Mbps -
beautiful).

BUT after about 10 mins of connection, the host just disconnects the laptop
and refuses reconnection attempts.

I've disabled screensavers and software firewall on the host with no result.
Any ideas what could be causing the disconnect?

TIA

Look at the group policies on the machine to make sure they are not configured to disconnect/log off
RD sessions after a certain amount of time. Go to "Start -> Run" and type gpedit.msc at the command
line. Navigate to the "Local Computer Policy -> Computer Configuration -> Administrative
Templates -> Windows Components -> Terminal Services -> Sessions". They should be in the "Not
configured" state, ie. the default. Do this on the RDP host.

Sorry for the long reply - no that's not it. No settings are specified at
all.

I did notice that the Logon screensaver is set to activate @ 600 secs which
would be 10 minutes! However, the logon screensaver is just that, for
logon, which (a) shouldn't be active once I've (ahem) logged on and (b)
should still allow me to logon once its activated.

Any idea why / how it would interfere with a live session?

TIA

FOLLOW-UP

I went and looked at the remote computer after it locked up at the 10 minute
mark. The logon screensaver was running. I wiggled the mouse and the Logon
screen appeared. I returned to my laptop terminal and lo and behold, my
remote session was active again, unforzen, continuing where I left off.

So, again, why would the screensaver be activating and why would that
interfere?

Please help - I'm going nuts trying to get my work done in 10 minute
increments :-(
