I have the same problem as described; however, my versions of the files
described in the hot fix are already newer than the versions cited in the
hotfix (meaning that the "known" problem was presumably fixed by a Windows
update, but it was not).
To summarize, I am running Win XP Pro on two computers. If the host is
running, I can used Remote Desktop Connection fine. However, if the host is
in stand-by, I cannot connect. The first time I try, I get a message that
the host is not available (which presumably wakes up the host). I wait a
minute and then try again. The second time, I get the log-in dialog box and
enter my name and password. The rest of the screen stays black. After
entering the name and password, nothing happens and after a minute or so the
remote session ends spontaneously without an error message.
(For my home connection, I have a combined cable modem and router. I have
tried both with and without the firewall; it makes no difference).
When I then go to the host computer (next morning), the computer is in
stand-by. I hit a key to bring it out of stand-by. The computer apparently
starts but the screen stays black and the computer is frozen. I have to hold
the power button to get it to re-boot.
I was told by a local "network guru" that Remote Desktop Connection does not
work EVER if the host computer is in stand-by, so I have to change all of my
power settings to make sure the host never goes into stand by. Is that
really true? Is there a way to get Remote Desktop Connection to work if the
host computer is allowed to go into stand-by and then wake from LAN?
