RAS - Loosing IP after dial-in attempt

L

Lisa

One of our Win2k servers is a file server and RAS server,
for dial-up access. I have yet to be able to get the RAS
working properly. The RAS service is setup with three
static IP to give-out (not DHCP), when clients dial-in
they get the second IP address and the server itself seems
to get the first IP address. When this happens it screws-
up our internal network, internal clients can no longer
see this same server using its network card IP address. I
can ping the server by name and get the network cards IP
address to respond, but the internal computers can no
longer communicate with the server using that IP address.
Help...I am at a loss as to what to do?

Thanks for all your help. Please reply by my email
address above.

Ok, I read the KB article and I don't think it applies
here. This Win2k server is a member server in an NT 4.0
domain and DNS is not installed, and the server is at
SP4. Any other ideas as to what it might be?

Did you read the bit about disabling Netbios over TCP/IP on the
"virtual" interface?

When a remote user connects, the RRAS server acquires an additional IP
for this interface. Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled by default on this
interface, which makes your server multihomed as far as Netbt is concerned.
So you get all the old NT problems of multihomed browsers.

If I disable Netbios than our servers and clients can no
longer see this server on our internal network. We do not
use DNS internally, therefore making changes to DNS is not
an option. What else can I try?

You seem to have missed the point. What you need to do is disable Netbios
over TCP/IP on the RAS interface, using the registry change in the KB
article.

Your server is probably your master browser. Its LAN IP is the IP
address used to obtain a browse list. When a remote user connects, the
server acquires an additional IP to act as the endpoint of the PPP
connection. If this extra address registers itself in WINS, you have all the
old multihomed browser problems from NT. To prevent this, you must add the
registry key to prevent Netbios over TCP/IP on the RRAS interface.

Restart RRAS and clean out WINS to remove any old entries for the extra
IP address. The only entries for the browser should refer to the server's
LAN IP.
