RAM question, PC2100 with other speeds?

Matt Lobegeiger

Hi all,
I've got a Gigabyte GA-7VA motherboard, with currently a single stick of
512mb PC2100 DDR ram in it. I know I can use different capacity RAM modules
together (ie. 512mb in one dimm and 1gb in another) but can I use different
speeds (ie. my PC2100 with PC3200)?

The motherbaord suports PC1600, 2100, 2700 and 3200 and up to 3GB total.

I've read everything I can find to no avail.

thanks

matt

I think so, assuming normal circumstances otherwise, and they run at
the lowest speed.

Good luck.

So you're saying both would run at PC2100 speed?

Yes. Because they have to run synchronously.

I have PC 3200 RAM running at 133MHz instead of 200MHz because my
CPU is 266MHz, not 400MHz. In this case, sync is not required but
provides slightly better performance. I bought the 400MHz RAM
because it can be used fully later after a CPU upgrade (whenever
that will be, considering the outrageous price increases).

You might want to wait for someone else to affirm my advice.

yes they run at the lowest common speed so they can run together. but you
knew this right john?

for the most part you can run the cpu and ram out of synch, but it does
offer a bit of overclocking room for the cpu. if you have a 266 cpu and 400
mhz ram, then the ram is not holding back you overclock. But you know this
right? you seem to know everything john.

That's quite alright, I though John was a man

John definitely is a man, does that mean Shannon is female? I have
