RAM in ASRock K7S8XE+

Hello.


I have an ASRock K7S8XE+ . The first piece of RAM I had in it was bad and
when the vendor returned it, it was not 8 chip, but rather 16. At a glance
it seems to run fine. I am wondering, though, about running it with my other
chip.

Will I have problems on this board if I run a PC2700 Crucial 64X64 16 chip
double sided 512M chip along with a PC2700 K-Byte (Avant) 8 chip single
sided 256M?

I'm guessing I need to run the 512 in the first slot if I can... if it's not
gonna work out, would memtest86 v3.1 catch any issues if I boot to that
first (both chips have tested OK alone... don't wan't to waste hours testing
if I don't need to).



Any thoughts appreciated.

I'd just try em and see.I have the same board but only one stick at
the moment so can't help there.Memtest won't help you because even if
it does throw up a fault call you it wouldn't tell you why.

Windows(if that's what you are running) is itself very
sensitive to RAM problems/anomlies so if you get a,"Windows
Encountered a Problem with the Registry) fault call anytime suspect
the RAM.

If this is win98 you may need to set a useful fixed Vcache as per,

They will never run in two channel mode because they are different
module sizes. It isn't really much faster anyway.

However, if you ever buy another module, try to match it to one of
them and then you can run in dual memory channel mode.

Hmmmmm hadn't considered 2 channel mode. I am running Paint Shop Pro with a
lot of render plug ins, and often have 7 or 5 images running in it at the
same time as I have Photo Editor and Print Shop 15 and maybe 4 or 5
instances of IE open for scouring for stock photos and used to keep up
fairly well with 384SDRAM on my last board, but I could stand to add memory
based on it's behaviors in the worst situations I put it through. I would
think that amount might matter more in this instance than speed, but then,
maybe I do not understand the differences in moving to DDR, either. I run a
1.3 Duron, but that actually doesn't seem to be a problem, I just do notice
a fair slowdown once I get so much stuff open.

Thanks, Shep... I am running both XP and 98SE. Very tough last few days here
and haven't had time to play with it, but I will give it a try tomorrow and
see what happens.
