RAID 0: can I switch controllers?

I want to migrate a RAID 0 array from a motherboard bound Promise SATA
RAID controller to a card (PCI or PCIexpress) based SATA RAID
controller. Can I just unplug the SATA drives from the motherboard
controller and plug them into the controller card? Would it work if
the new RAID controller was also made by Promise? Are RAID 0 arrays
portable like that? I'm building a new computer, and want the
convienence of just dropping my data disks into a new chasis. - Paul

very unlikely, unless they are the same "family" of controllers.

The controller's setup tool wrote some "hidden" config data to the drives
that is interrogated by the drivers at boot time to validate that they are
part of the array. diferent controllers use different config data; also
exactly how they span the two disks is really up to their individual
design, so two designers may do it differently.

Yes, you should be able to change controllers without any problems,
what I need to know is if you're motherboard SATA controller is just
a SATA interface with software striping of the RAID array through XP,
or is it actual HARDWARE RAID Striping?
