Quiet laptop

Hi dudes

I'm on the lookout for a quiet laptop, preferably Intel-based. I've
heard about laptops where the fans don't come on unless you're gaming or
running something CPU-intensive - could anyone recommend such a laptop
from experience? Or provide any general guidelines to help me purchase
such a system?

I don't need anything fancy, just something nice and quiet with a bit of
power in case I need it (no Celerons!).

Ideally I'd like a laptop where the fans didn't come on at all if I was
just browsing the web or reading newsgroups.

Thanks!

I find the Toshiba S1 or similar with the "M" processor are pretty quiet,
run pretty cool & battery lasts much longer than P4 ones.
You talking new, secondhand, cheap or ???????????

Is there any good reason why you prefer Intel?

Though they are both M processors, the Pentium 4 M and the Pentium M are
quite different. I would recommend to look for a Pentium M (of AMD Turion)

I have an HP Athlon64 notebook. It's very fast and the processor fan only
comes on if I'm doing some very serious computing like running a Verilog
simulation. The new Turions are significantly lower power then the
standard A64s, given that the A64 meets your quiet test the Turions will
fit the bill splendidly. Also A64 notebooks are much cheaper then
Centrinos, they are also faster.

Yes. I plan to load 2003 Server on it and I've found driver support
disastrous for non-Intel chipsets.

I have an AMD Turion64 laptop for work and it's cool but also pretty
noisy - the chassis fan is on about 60% of the time with maximum power
saving selected. I guess there's much more to a quiet laptop than the
CPU, which is why I'm interested in suggestions on specific models.
