Quick Launch problem

Now I know why you call yourself "Uncle Grumpy."

Also, I don't think my problem is unique - I just think that no one out
there has a solution for it - including YOU!!!

Ok, here goes:

To order Quick Launch:

1. Add (in your case) all folders to Quick Launch
2. Click on each one (hold left mouse click down) and drag to where you
want it on the Quick Launch bar (you will see a black bar appear when you
can release)
3. Release the left mouse button.
4. Do this with all 'Quick Launch Folders'

Now locate the folder which now contains your Quick Launch layout:

C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Quick Launch

In this folder you will see your Quick Launch layout.

Save this folder somewhere, in case you have to restore.

The only way your Quick Launch can be removed is if you remove any of the
entries, OR something is deleting all contents of this folder.

WAIT ......................

It just dawned on me, you said that the separators are disappearing between
folders. You are describing the wrong area. Here is the Taskbar:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| START | Quick Launch Area || TOOLBAR1 || TOOLBAR 2|| TOOLBAR
....||Applications... | System Tray
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You are describing the Taskbar Toolbar bar areas (which by the way, you can
do this same thing you want in the Quick Launch area and solve most of your
problems).

The Toolbar areas are handled totally different than the Quick Launch Area.
And they sometimes do disappear based on updates from Microsoft, using Safe
Mode, .... This has always been a known problem with the Taskbar since day
one.

Another solution is to create a new TaskBar. After creating a new TOOLBAR,
left mouse click and hold, drag to another edge of the screen (I have my
Office Toolbar at the top of the desktop screen), and release. A new
TaskBar will be creating with this TOOLBAR. Then right-click on this
TaskBar and and your toolbars.

The new toolbar does not a Quick Launch feature, so your stuck as how you
place them. You can move them around by holding down the separator and
sliding left-to-right, right-to-left, to get where you want.

I would create a My Toolbar folder under My Documents and place all my
toolbars that I use in that folder ... since they are all shortcuts anyway.
That way you can restore when needed. But I never have had to ... uncless I
have chosen to Close one of the toolbars.

You can Hide and Keep on Top this TaskBar as well.

Thanks so much for the procedures - and for correcting me. I'll probably
get to try out your method tomorrow.

R. McCarty's is the straightforward/easy solution.

That is much more involved than necessary, but I find that
especially useful for doing incremental Windows installations.
Currently I use Partition Manager 2005. You just make a copy(s) of
the Windows partition. It's a Windows program that does the work on
a reboot. I keep PartitionMagic around as a backup disk manager in
case Partition Manager doesn't do a particular task.

QL - quick launch ALL= all IS = is

I guess it's no longer a QuickLaunch toolbar but is a floating menu
using the icons from the Quick Launch folder.

Your definition of ALL seems a bit overinclusive. Are you actually
including all the icons such as the trashcan?

This time, the toolbars are missing.

Rightclick on an empty part of the main Taskbar > Toolbars > tick the
one you want or use New Folder... if it is not listed.

The resulting toolbar can be drawn out to show the icons or squeezed up
so that it pops up like a menu when it is clicked. Lock the Taskbar
afterwards to avoid accidents.

Sorry if it seems like I posted twice. I do try to show the proper
etiquette when posting. I have a problem with pain in my neck and
head - and it severely affects my memory. There are few moments
when I feel well enough to get on the PC - but it is the only
"hobby" I am capable of enjoying due to my illness. In any case, I
will look up my previous post - but, even if it sounded like the
same problem, it isn't. Earlier, I was trying to find a way to
replace my Quick Launch icons in the order I wanted them (rather
than alphabetically) - when I lost them on a reboot. Since that
would mean prefixing each of the icon shortcuts with a numeral, I
thought it would be a pain because I often try new software and,
each time I placed a new icon in the Quick Launch area, it would
mean renumbering the existing icons. As I've said previously, I
have more than 140 icons in the Quick Launce area (I know that's a
lot, but I like them there - it's one of the ways I personalize my
PC).

So, to help with my problem, I learned how to create more Toolbars
in the Quick Launch area in order to categorize my icons, i.e. one
toolbar for graphics, one toolbar for utilities, etc.). That way,
if they got mixed up, at least there would be far fewer in each
toolbar to straighten out. NOTE: The only problem I found is that
you are limited as to how many toolbars you can have in the Quick
Launce area - even using small icons. Unfortunately, the other
day, it happened again - I not only lost all my icons in the Quick
Launch area, I also lost the divisions between toolbars. I tried a
Restore to when I knew the toolbars and icons were there - but, to
my surprise, the Restore didn't replace my icons OR toolbars.
Hence, the second post.

Bottom Line: I apologize for seeming to post twice for the same
issue. As for the Thank You's, I also apologize - my neck pain
must have interferred with my memory because, if you've seen any of
my other posts, you'll find that I always that you folks that try
to help others - my hat is off to you!!! As for posting in three
groups, I have found that most people read either of the three
groups - but not all three. Therefore, I am more likely to more
(good) replies if I post in all three. I don't always do that -
but, if I believe the question I'm asking is likely to get more
responses from more than one group, I will post in all of them.
After all, there is a lot of overlap in those three computer groups
and a lot of expertise between them.

Now, back to my problem: Since I don't know why I sometimes lose
my Quick Launce icons, and I like them all organized the way I like
them on the Desktop, I still am looking for a way to accomplish
this - and, if they disappear, I'm looking for an easy way to
restore them in the order I like. To this end, I don't yet have a
solution. Also, while I'm at it, I think I am limited to nine
toolbars in the Quick Launch area (all vertical separations from
the bottom of the screen to the top of the popup tool area). It
would be helpful if I could have stacked toolbars in that area
since some of the categories I use only have a few icons in them
(and some have many). Perhaps there is another way around this -
and still keep my desktop neat.

Thanks again............

Why not have a good close look at True Launch Bar
http://www.truelaunchbar.com/.

It is a third party utility which gives you a lot more flexibility in
setting up your taskbars (one of which is the Quick Launch taskbar).

It has its own backups and you can name folders in toolbars in a way
you can not so easily in native XP.

it simply rebuilds all icons

No, I guess I'm using the wrong terminology. What I do is place a shortcut
for every program I have in the middle of the Toolbar (I have been calling
this the Quick Launch area - guess I'm wrong).

What does Locking do?
