Quick Launch icons randomly changed and odd program doubles

I've been getting a couple annoying glitches for the past few months
on my copy of Wndows XP Pro.
I doubt they are related, but I'll address them both at once...

One thing that has happened several times, is I will log in to find
the Quick Launch icons randomly reassigned. If I right click and
select properties, the correct icon is shown in the "[Show Desktop,
Mozilla Firefox, Windows Live Messenger, etc] Properties" box. They
will be back to normal when the computer is restarted, but while I'm
using it, the only way to get the correct icon back is to create a new
Quick Launch entry for each item.

The other glitch may or may not be Windows' fault. I'm getting a
similar glitch with two different programs that started happening at
the same time.
When I open Winamp, then close it, the process is left running. The
next time I go to open it, it won't let me. It has to be closed from
the task manager each time - very annoying.
Firefox is also leaving a spare process open some of the time. In
Firefox's case this means that if I go to open a second, or new
window, all my bookmarks are gone.

I am having a similar problem. The order the quick launch are displayed seems
to randomly change. They still perform the same functions but are in a
different sequence on the display. THis seems to have just started in the
last 5 or 6 weeks, so I am wondering if it is related to a patch that was
installed

Set the order, then run the edit Save Settings on Exit from line 54

Kelly,
I'm in the process of moving from old XPHome/SP2 box into new XPHome/SP3
computer, and I noticed that my carefully arranged Quick Launch icons
jump into a new order every time I reboot. I came here to look through
back postings and found your note to another person with the same
problem.

BUT I'm absolutely paranoid about launching unnecessary processes--I use
a great utility from PCMag called StartupCop after any installation or
other change to see if anything new has been added--and I see that your
reg. edit also launches system32\systray.exe as a startup process.

Why is that necessary? I had a system tray before, without it running.
And I have a system tray on the old box without that process running. If
I were to delete everything in your reg. edit after the first item...

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000000

....would that cause XP to save the QL settings without making any other
changes? (I realize as I write this that I could make just that change
by hand in regedit and see what happens, but I'm thinking I may just
learn something from your response.)

Thanks much for your previous work, by the way...I remember that when I
was first setting up XP on that old box nearly six years ago, I made many
trips to your site and used many of your tips.

GREAT feedback.

Systray is not necessary nor will cause any harm. I added it back in the
day for those who had installed XP as an upgrade.

Also, thanks for your support of my work.)
