question on DNS forwarding

What is the advantage (if any) of having Forwarders configured on my
Windows2000 DNS Server ?
I noticed that it's not necessary to have Forwarding enabled in order to
access external web sites.

So why do most peoples' configurations of Win2k DNS always have the ISPs DNS
servers enabled in the
Forwarding tab ?

thanks for any insight...

Some people don't want their DNS servers chasing down requests for records.
They prefer that their DNS servers just give the request to the ISP's DNS
servers and then wait for the response.

Some DNS servers are behind a firewall and are not allowed access to the
external world.

Which also reduces traffic on the link to the Internet.
