Question: My son has a problem with his system.

He's not sure what he did, but he now has a "black space" in his
Add/Remove window in his Control Panel that is 12" or so deep.

The last 2 times I saw his computer, it's doing the same thing.

I've seen a similar situation YEARS ago on my machine. I think I
eventually fdisked and reformatted.

As he is in the middle of his school year in high school, it's not
practical for him to take time to fdisk, format, and then reinstall
everything.

Can anyone tell me what causes this LONG black space in the Add/Remove
utility, and how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks. I failed to specify that this is his Add / Remove software
utility.

However, I think if he does a "rollback", that will likely fix the
problem.

As I recall, his rollback is a feature of his BIOS, so it should be
simple for him to re-install his original system when he boots. Or it
may be in his Windows XP menu somewhere.

His computer likely didn't like some type of software he installed. I
will warn him about 3rd party drivers. I just gave him a dozen drivers
from the company that built his machine (HP), and his DVD driver
wouldn't load. So he likely has some funny drivers that shouldn't be
in the machine to begin with.

Thanks again!

And "Happy Holidays!" and "Happy New Year!"

No. You specified that and that is why I gave you that answer.

A blank space in Add/Remove is NEVER a reason to fdisk/format.
