Question about Vista install

T

Tammy H.

I have a question about Vista. I currently have XP installed however it
seems to be a corrupted install as software, i.e. Internet Explorer,
downloaded software, etc, gets uninstalled and won't work everytime I turn
off the PC. I was wondering do I need to purchase the full version of Vista
Basic or can I use the upgrade. I have read on one website that the upgrade
won't work but on another website it states that corruptions will be repaired
with the upgrade. Which is correct?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Hi Tammy,

As long as you can boot into the XP installation, insert the DVD and start
setup, all you need is the upgrade disk. What you can't do is boot the Vista
install disk and run setup outside of XP, you must have a working
installation to start from within. Once you start, you can either upgrade or
choose a custom install and not have the corrupt XP installation ported
over. In either case, you will have a fresh operating system as Vista setup
will move the XP install to a windows.old folder (it doesn't just overwrite
the corrupt files). If you upgrade, at the end of setup it will import in
the user profiles, software, and settings from XP, otherwise not.

Make sure your system is capable of running the version of Vista you are
purchasing, and that drivers are available for your hardware. Even with
Vista Basic you should have a minimum of 512MB of ram installed for
reasonable performance.

Your other choice would be a "scorched earth" re-install of XP, restoring to
factory setting. I just did that on a computer that was @ 3 years old that
had gotten slow and unstable and it acts like new now. Back up documents,
favorites, etc.
