Question about the XP upgrade advisor

Isn't it useless now if you want to upgrade your machine
to XP SP2? Since XP SP2 breaks so many things, you could
run the upgrade advisor and have it tell you all is ok
with XP, install XP, Install SP2 as most people like to be
on the latest service pack, and find whole new problems
the upgrade advisor never indicated. They should update
the upgrade advisor for SP2.

What things does SP2 break? You are much more likely
to have problems with the upgrade to XP than the
upgrade of XP to SP2.

You should be aware that if you are upgrading an
earlier version of Windows to XP, you will probably
have to upgrade all the drivers for all your hardware.

If I were doing the upgrade, I would look into slipstreaming
SP2 and my XP install disk so SP2 would already be installed when
I got through. Don't know if you can do this with an upgrade disk.

SP2 is NOT a curse. It is more like a blessing.

Personally, after reading all the newsgroups and the Microsoft site that
shows a list of software conflicts (large list of very common software)....
I will wait until SP2a comes out.

It is sure to be on the horizon (a few months).

It is not clear exactly what that list means. I haven't had
problems with the few software items I have on that list.
And the manufacturer's websites are quiet at this point to
a large extent.

As far as newsgroups go, I think that problems have
actually been few. Is there a newsgroup that
addresses sp2 problems alone?

But if you are concerned, certainly wait. I would
still advise businesses to wait until the situation
became clearer.

That list means you check out with the software vendor and get informed,
not make decisions based on assumption and inaccurate thought. Not
every item on that list is broken by SP2 or to any great degree that's
not easily dealt with nor are people necessarily experiencing problems.
The reputable vendors have information about compatibility and how to
handle it. The several of my packages on there turned out to be no
problems. And don't expect any SP2a -- some sort of fix to SP2. SP1a
only happened due to a suite brought by sun, not to correct any problems
in the release of SP1. Do a complete image of your system, do your
homework from the software vendors and do the upgrade.
