question about system restore

The PC that I have has Java 1.4.2 I'd like to get update to either 1.4.2_06
or their
most recent Java 1.5 from the Sun site. I've asked this question before in a
way even I didn't understand, and though there were people here that tried
,they could
not answer it either. That was my fault, this time I'm going to ask it right.
I have both been told & read in forums like this one that the best way to
install a
Java application such as this I need to Uninstall the Java 1.4.2 first then
install the
Java 1.4.2_06 or whatever.
Now in the event that, however unlikely it maybe, I or some incident srcews
up the
installation, will system restore still have the Java 1.4.2 & restore it so
that I can run my PC on it until I do it again & do it right on that second
try?
This question is particular importance to me,in that this'll be my first
time doing this.

I doubt if System Restore will restore it, but you don't need Java for most
Web sites, including www.java.com
