Question about DDE

I am trying to establish MS Word as a DDE server in an application I'm
writing. I am using appname "WINWORD", but the attempt to open a
channel is failing. What exactly does Windows do with this string when
it tries to find the app? Does it look for it in the registry
somewhere? Thanks for any help.
