Question about 'bridging'

HI, I need some clarification on exactly what 'network bridging' will do
please.

I have a desktop on a home network of three PCs (wired network via a router
and sharing ADSL connectivity, printers etc). My desktop is not the gateway.

I also have a laptop which I occasionally want to link to my desktop, but I
don't want the hassle of putting in an extra cable to the router which is on
a different floor of the house.

Question - can I set up a second ad-hoc network between my laptop and
desktop using a crossover cable, then 'bridge' the two networks so that I
also have ADSL connectivity, printer sharing etc on my laptop. ?

Thanks.

Yes, that should work. I've written a web page with details:
