Quattro Pro 4 Data Conversion

randau

I'm planning to upgrade from an old machine running Windows'ME to a new
machine with Windows'XP. I have been using the Quattro Pro 4
spreadsheet program for some years and have created a lot of
spreadsheets many of which I wish to continue using. Since Quattro Pro
4 is a DOS program, I expect it won't work in Windows'XP. Does anyone
know of a spreadsheet program (Quattro or otherwise) that runs on XP
and will read Quattro Pro 4 spreadsheet data?

Do not assume that. Many DOS programs work in Windows XP. I don't know
specifically about Quattro Pro 4, but perhaps someone elese does.

There are have been many versions of Quattro Pro since version 4. The
current version is Quattro Pro X3. It's a Windows program and runs under
Windows XP just fine, as do at least most of the other recent versions.

Moreover there are undoubtedly lots of other compatible programs, probably
even Microsoft Excel with the correct filters installed.

I spent a (very) few minutes searching microsoft and looking at my
Excel 2003 help. I have not used Quattro Pro in many years, but I do
still have some old files left over in Quattro Pro DOS formats. I'm
sure you can import the files. There are at least two issues. You will
probably need to download the converter pack from Microsoft--it's
free. It loads into Excel and allows you to open and save files to a
variety of older less used (today) file formats. The other issue you
may run into is that Excel may only open the "active" worksheet. Also,
when I have imported charts or graphs in the past I was less than
satisifed. The graph came through but not the formatting.

If you search Microsoft's site using "Supported Lotus 1-2-3 and
Quattro Pro versions" you will find some helpful information. I copied
this limited info from my Excel help:

"WQ1 (*.wq1) Quattro Pro for MS-DOS Opens and saves only the active
worksheet
..wb1 Quattro Pro version 5.0 for Windows Opens only, only available
with converter loaded
..wb3 Quattro Pro version 7.0 for Windows Opens only, only available
with converter loaded.
..wks Microsoft Works version 2.0 for Windows and Microsoft Works for
MS-DOS Opens only Microsoft Works version 2.0 for Windows or Microsoft
Works for MS-DOS spreadsheets

If you are interested in some other spreadsheet program, I will be of
no help. Excel has pleased me for many years. I started with version 2
of Lotus 1-2-3, then went to Quattro Pro, and finally to Excel. You
are welcome to e-mail me directly if you have other questions. Remove
the "nospam.
".

Doesn't Quattro have the ability so save the sheet in other formats, you may
be able to find a format that can serve as an intermediate file which can
then be imported by Microsoft Office.

Microsoft Excel 2003 does. I expect Lotus Suite spreadsheet would as well
as Wordperfect Office spreadhseet and even OpenOffice would too.

I checked MS Excel 2003, and it has Quattro Pro/DOS files listed as a "file
type" that it opens....

Yep, I checked Excel 2002 (Office XP) and it also will import Quattro/Dos
(.Wq1) file extensions.
Good suggestion.

Thanks for all your relevant and meaningful replies. I now feel better
about the likelihood of being able to salvage my Quattro Pro 4
spreadsheets in some useful form running in XP.

Since my initial post, I revisited the Corel web site searching for
anything more I could find about Quattro Pro. Neither Corel nor their
web site is easy to communicate with, but I did run across an item that
implied that the current Quattro Pro could be used in Quattro, Excel,
or Lotus modes. I've been using Quattro Pro 4 in Lotus mode from the
beginning, because I liked the Lotus menu interface better. It's now
hard-wired in my brain. So, I'd like to stick with Quattro if I can
still use its Lotus menu interface.

Are there any Quattro spreadsheet users that can tell me whether or not
current Quattro versions (runable in XP) will still read Quattro 4
spreadsheets (with extensions .wQ1 or .wk1) and/or that the Lotus menu
interface option is still viable?

I've searched Google Groups for Quattro dedicated newsgroups, but could
find none. Does anyone know of a publicly accessible Quattro related
newsgroup that's currently active?

Thanks again for your helpful replies,

There are foour Quattro Pro newsgroups on Corel's news server
cnews.corel.com. There's a group for version 11, 12, & 13 and one group for
older versions.

There are four Quattro Pro newsgroups on Corel's news server
cnews.corel.com. There's a group for version 11, 12, & 13 and one group for
older versions.

Thank you. Do you know if there's a way to access these groups through
Google? I do all my newsgroup communication through Google Groups.

Sure. This one is microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

I suggest, though, that you use a newsreader to access what are actually
Usenet newsgroups. XP comes with Outlook Express which can be set up for
newsgroup access. Here is a link with info on how to do it.

Here is a link to a list of MS newsgroups for the web interface. You can
find the names for MS newsgroups here to use on Google Groups if you want.
