Quar Core 2 Duo and 64 bit?

I can't go to Vista just yet as there are some aompatibility issues
with legacy applications I am forced to run.
So, should I order Windows XP 64 bit? I don't have any 64 bit
applications just yet and probably won't for a while, but will other
32 bit standard apps run faster on a 64bit OS or slower? Or no change?

Stick with 32-bit. Your legacy applications may not run properly on x64
and the 32-bit ones won't run any faster.

I agree. I do have 64-bit XP Pro, 32-bit *may* run a tad faster, but not
worth the change, and there are some 32-bit apps that won't run properly, or
at all under 64-bit. This also depends on 64-bit drivers being available for
your hardware.

Probably not.

There are very few available yet.

They will run at much the same speed they do now. There is hardly any
benefit to be achieved by running 64-bit Windows unless you have
64-bit apps.

Moreover, you may have trouble getting 64-bit drivers for all your
hardware.

In a few years, most of us will be running 64-bit Windows. But for the
present, only rarely does it make sense for someone to do so.

FYI there is also a newsgroup for 64bit XP.
microsoft.public.windows.64bit.general

Probably not benefit and some drawbacks - lack of hardware drivers - if you
go to 64bit XP.

No. Just buy XP2 32 bit and it will work perfectly.

Stick with 32-bit. Your legacy applications may not run properly on x64
and the 32-bit ones won't run any faster.

John

That seems to be the consensus. Thanks, kids!
