Quake2 shuts off!

Yo everyone who knows about this if you can help...

I have "re-enlivened" my interest in playing Q2 when I ran into the original
disc in a box last night, and installed it and then stalled the 3.20 update using
the zip file.

I use a full install so as not to use the CDROM drive and the game will start
it's own "pseudo-play" in software mode, I hit enter or esc to gain the menu
for setup, go into video settings set it to 'default opengl' and select a screen
rez, sync every frame yes, and tap enter.

Then the GUI goes through some motions and the game shuts down while the
music continues to play, and the game does not accept any of the settings, very
odd, as I have played Q2 on this x800xl card (made by ATI) and on this install
of XP home, sp2.

These are the openGL drivers that are available in the system 32 folder, I know
the trick that one must be in the Q2 root directory but not one of them will
make the game work:

atioglx1.dll v: 6.14.10.1091
atioglx2.dll v: 6.14.10.6479
atioglxx.dll v: 6.14.10.6479

From driver: 7-6_xp_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_48640.exe

If I emember correctly the xx one is the one that allowed the game to work last
I played. The installation did not include a .CFG file, no idea why.

Can anyone please help out? I would sincerely much appreciate it,

You should NOT move any driver file into the Quake2 folder. Q2 3.20 works
fine with my X1900 Crossfire setup out of the box. Make sure you have the
original ref_gl.dll from the 3.20 patch in your Quake2 folder (CRC32 of the
file is CDA0EC27).

Did you replace or alter opengl32.dll in your Windows\System32 folder at any
point? Check and make sure it is a Microsoft file, not an ATi file. No ATi
driver update would have touched it.

Did you see if there were any update patches for the game?

3.20 was the final patch for Quake2. IIRC it was also the patch that removed
the CD-check for hosting multiplayer games.
