QMS 2300 "hard drive kit" = a regular IDE HD?

Hi,

Anyone knows if the "hard drive kit" sold by QMS / KonicaMinolta for
their 2350 printer series includes any electronics/controller board?.
Or is it simply a regular IDE hard disk in some mounting bracket?.

If so (if it's just a IDE hard disk), is the connector proprietary?

I really don't feel like spending a lot of money for a regular IDE hard
drive, specially when I could just open up the printer and connect my
own hard disk.

I'm asking because I've seen this "QMS hard drive upgrade kit" and what
is pictured is a regular 2.1gig Seagate hard drive, but sold for $75!.

Anyone has experience with QMS 23xx printers and the "internal hard
drive kit"?.

Can I just use any 3.5" inch, IDE (4gig) hard drive?.

According to the service manual....

"IDE Hard Disk Kit (includes daughterboard, hard disk and TOD
clock); IDE Hard Disk Kit (without hard disk) for third party hard
disks."

Also referring to the Controller Board
"J13 Connector - PCI IDE Hard Drive Card Bus"

So it looks like J13 is the connector on the controller board that the hard
drive connects to. If you remove the right cover and the controller board
protective cover you should be able to see J13, if it is a 40 pin IDE connector
then I suspect that is the answer. There was no mention of a hard drive power
cable though, and that could be a problem. Standard and Ultra IDE cables do not
provide power so there is something apparently missing.
It may be that the Minolta QMS Hard Disk Functionality Kit
Part #: 2600697-100 is required to provide power to the drive, and it may do
other essential things as well.
The quick answer is that you can use a standard IDE drive but the question is
do you need to install the kit first and where will the power come from?
I have two suggestions.
1. See if the controller board has a power connector, it is not on the diagram
in the manual.
2. Post the question in the laser forum at www.fixyourownprinter.com someone
there may have been through this.
If you would like the service manual e-mail me and I will send it to you.

It could be formatted in a special format, possibly having a filesystm/OS
on it.
