Q: The Powercolor Brand (9800Pro) ?

E

Eyman

Hi,

Im looking at upgrading to a 9800Pro since the prices have dropped
substantially since the release of the 9800XT.

I can pick up a Powercolor 9800Pro fairly cheap here in Sydney AUS compared
to other brands and would like to know peoples opinions of it.

In terms of performance its up there with the rest of the 9800Pro's but I
would like to know about build quality. I dont plan on overclocking either.

Thanks

Eyman

My opinion, on Powercolor build-quality, is that it's total crap.

I'm curious as to what you base that on, Strontium. Granted, the first one I was sent from
Newegg was a dud, but the one I'm using now (powercolor 9700PRO) is working great.

And, I'm sure people will come out of the woodwork saying the same thing as
you. I'm excercising my opinion and my experience, with that company. To
me (READ MY EXPERIENCE), they use very shoddy components. Especially the
PCB. I won't go into how low grade the memory that they use is. You don't
overclock, I gather, so don't think you'd even know what I was talking
about. But, overall, IMO powercolor is crap. Glad it works, for you. I
build tanks. Powercolor crumbles under ANY diress, in my humble experience.

ciao

No need to read me the riot act Strontium; I asked you nicely and this is the response I get?

Sheesh.

Sheesh.

Riot act? If that's how you interpret an opinion, I wonder how you can
survive in a glass house. BTW how do you survive with skin as thin, as
paper? SHEESH, is about right.

I don't know about the Powercolor 9800 Pro but I bought a Powercolor
9700 Pro a few weeks ago. My experience with it?

1. The first Powercolor 9700 Pro was DOA. With it installed in my
system, my computer would not even go through post (normal system
check, drives, ram, etc before the system actually boots to the OS)
So, I got an RMA and sent it back for a replacement,

2. The replacement arrived about a week later, It was also DOA! I
work in computers so I took this one to work to try in a few other
computers. Same results! Being the clever fellow, I began to see a
pattern emerging. ;^)

3. I went to Best Buy and bought an ATI 9800 Pro for $299 and it
works beautifully!

4. I sent the Powercolor 9700 Pro back and, while others may have
found a Powercolor card that works, I personally will never buy
anything from them again.

I am typing this with my left hand (right hand in a sling) so I hope I
didn't make too many typos.

Good luck!

Richard
