put check mark in text box form field

I would like for the Check Box Form Field to be filled in with a check mark
rather than an "x". I'm not successful at trying to change the symbol that
is inserted. Any ideas?

You probably won't succeed at that. When you click on a Check Box, Word does
not insert a symbol into a box. It simply exchanges one symbol (a x-ed box)
for another symbol (an empty box).

That's the way the check box form field works; you can't change it. And it
is pretty much the only choice you have in a protected form. If you don't
need forms protection, you can use macros that swap checked and unchecked
boxes; see http://gregmaxey.mvps.org/Add_Toggle_Objects.htm

You can't change it in a protected form. However, there are a number of ways
to create and use clickable checkboxes in documents / templates. Some
require protected or locked forms, others do not. Take a look at the
Checkbox template available at
http://www.addbalance.com/word/download.htm#CheckboxAddIn for an exploration
of these. The other methods will allow a tick or check mark instead of an X.
