purple vertical stripes on screen

I am using win xp on a Dell Inspir. desktop. The problem starts about
20 mins after booting, suddenly after behaving normally the screen is
covered in pink/purplish vertical stripes. Help! Thanks

Check all connections..
Hook it up to a different monitor..
Update the video card drivers and refresh rate..
Replace the video card..

I hate to "agree" but it sounds like the video is going bad (or probably the
video memory) -- replace the video card (it's the stripes that give it away).
