Publishing back to HD with FP 2003

B

boliver

Having just spent the last 6 months upgrading the computer, installing
XP and working my way through updated (XP) versions of software - I've
just gotten around to buying and installing Frontpage 2003. I had not
reinstalled the old version on the new HD so basically starting from
scratch.

I would like to publish some existing neglected sites back to my hard
drive for archiving and updating - but although that was a simple task
in FP 98 or 99 (whatever I had) it is not so apparent in the new
version.

I've done a google group search and have followed some of the
instructions - but could someone give me "specific" instructions as to
which programs to open and what buttons to hit and in what order? I say
that because sometimes what is obvious to the instructor because they
have done it so many times, completely confuses the student because
some steps are assumed - and this program is not functioning at all
like I am used to!

I think this is going to be a bigger learning curve than I anticipated!
Thanks in advance for any and all assistance.

Open FrontPage and click File > New > Then in the right panel click More web site templates and then
select Empty web site,
FrontPage will create a new web site.
Then click File > Close site and FrontPage will close it.
Click File > Open Site and right click on the folder you just made, select Rename and rename it to
match one of your webs.
Close the panel
Click File > Open Site and enter the address of one of your webs http://wwwtheweb.com and enter the
user name and password when prompted.
When it opens, click File > Publish site and then browse to the new empty web you just created on
your hard drive.

Note: the server will have to have FrontPage extensions installed for this to work.

Repeat the process for each web.

Thanks Steve - unfortunately only the main "files" seemed to be brought
over - none of the listed pages so nothing will open. Any idea what I'm
doing wrong? I went to the recommended microsoft as well, but couldn't
gleen any further clues :)

I sure wish that this version didn't look so radically different from
what I am used to (PF2000 btw) I feel like I'm starting all over with
the learning curve!

Are you logging into the remote site using http:// or ftp://

If ftp:// it won't work, but there is a solution.

I'm back and still confused!

I have repeatedly followed the advise I received here (even bought FP
Inside Out and Step by Step) and still can't seem to get my site
published back to my computer.

1-I created a new blank web
2-I use FP2003 to open the internet site with http://mysite.net and all
the folders and pages are listed.
3-I go to File>Publish site - set "remote server type" to "File System"
as that is all that it will allow - make sure that I'm publishing all
pages - and hit publish.

All that is brought over are the file folder icons
("_borders","_disk2", "images" etc) which seem to contain nothing. On
my server site I can see the listing of the multitude of pages that the
website contains - but they won't publish back to my computer.

What in the world am I missing?

In the Remotes Web Site View - Remotes Web Site Properties, after selecting File System are you browsing to or entering an existing
folder (say C:\MyWeb) on your PC
And when done publishing select the Open your Remote site in FP link
Run a Tool Recalculate Hyperlinks
- if the files are still not visible try switching views (to Reports and back to Folders)

Thanks to all who offered advise!

The resolution was that my host had to reset the FrontPage extentions
on my site and it downloaded without a hitch. I knew I wasn't going
crazy!

In the remote website properties dialog, are you selecting the folder to
publish to?
(c:/my webs/mynewsite) or whereever you created the new web.
