.pst - not personal folders file?

I am having a difficulty with my Outlook.

To start with:

Six weeks ago, before I left my last job, I was using Outlook 2000, maybe
2003. I generated a .pst with all of my information. Stupidly, I forgot to
check to make sure I could open the file on that same computer.

I burned the file to a CD, took the CD home, then moved across the country
(so I can't simply go back to my old job and ask to fix it).

Now that I've got everything set up, I tried to open up my Outlook 2007 on
my home computer and restore the information so I can get all of my old
e-mail addresses. My problem is that when I attempt to open the file, I get
this error: "The file C:\<path> is not a personal folders file."

I have attempted
File -> Open -> Outlook Data File.
File -> Data File Management ... Add...
File -> Import and Export -> From another program or file -> .pst ->
path\filename

Everything ends with the same error. The file is not "Read Only" and it is
almost 70MB in size, so it has data - I just can't read it.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

I double-checked that the file was not read only as soon as I put it on the
hard drive. When I started having errors, I went so far as to remove the read
only stats from the entire folder tree. I then made a copy and removed all
personal information (figured it couldn't hurt).

Still no luck. Thanks for the guess, though.

Can you try to run scanpst on the file? But if the file got damaged on
the way, there is a chance that you have lost all data.

P.S. Sorry, you already mentioned in your post that the file was not
read-only - I didn't read all the way to the end.

If you previously used OL2003 then unless you have OL2003 or OL2007 on your
home PC the data file is of a different format & cannot be read by earlier
versions of OL
However if the versions are the same then unfortunately it would appear the
method used to create the data file was at fault, and only a recovery co.
might be able to help

Chances are, then, that the PST is toast. Investigate one of the commercial
PST recovery tools. Google "(office OR pst) recovery"
