When I try to delete emails to reduce the size of the .pst file, the message
indicating the probelm reappears. No deletes happen. How can I remove items
to reduce the size of this file?

Here is the entier message.
The file C:\Outlook.pst has reached its maximum size. To reduce the amopunt
of data in this file, select some items you no longer need, and then
permanently delete them by pressing SHIFT+DELETE. You could also consider
the new Outlook personal folders file (.pst) introduced with Outlook 2003
that provides greater capacity for storing items and folders.

Obviously the instructions for delete don't work, nor do any other delete
options.

Odds are, if you check the size of your PST it was created in an older
version of Outlook. Outlook 2002 and earlier had a maximum PST size of 2 GB
but of course it can create problems before that.

Try the 2GB repair link.

Microsoft Outlook 2002 and earlier versions limit the size of Personal
Folders (PST) file to 2GB. Whenever the PST file reaches or exceeds
that limit, you will not be able to open or load it any more, or you
cannot add any new data to it. This is called oversized PST file
problem. More detailed information can be found at
http://www.datanumen.com/aor/problems/2gb-pst.htm

You can use Advanced Outlook Repair to solve the problem, by either
converting it into Outlook 2003 format ( http://www.datanumen.com/aor/problems/convert-2gb-pst.htm
), or splitting it into smaller pieces ( http://www.datanumen.com/aor/problems/split-2gb-pst.htm
)

Advanced Outlook Repair.

And you can also download a free demo version at http://www.datanumen.com/aor/aor.exe
