ps/2 mouse problem

I've been using the touch-pad on the keyboard on my laptop, but now I want to
use an old PS/2 mouse I've got (as i need the single USb port for the
printer).
When i boot up and use the mouse everything goes nuts....windows popping up
everywhre etc. But, after some time, and if I unplug it a few times the
mouse works fine.
I found a paper in tech support which talked me through deleting registry
entries, uninstalling from device manager etc. i spent an hour doing all
that....no difference.
I've tried another mouse...exactly the same...so it's not hardware. Both
mouses are intellipoint, wheel, ps/2.
Give me a clue here please...my life isn't long enough to do all this stuff.
Operating system is XP Professional. nothing else special or unique.
Thanks in advance.
BTW....there isn't a category anymore that covers this sort of stuff (what
happened ??? your support used to be so good...and now it just drains life
and time away ...). Hope someone out ther is still listening, cos it doesn;t
seem so.......

You didn't specify your Notebook Vendor/Model # so this may not
apply in your case. Most notebook BIOS setups provide configuration
for the Touchpad/Mouse. Usually the setting toggles between internal
touchpad, mouse or Auto. From your description, it sounds like both
pointing devices are active. Also, the same driver that runs the TP,
will also control the mouse. Does the notebook have a Touchpad
software program installed ? (Synaptics, etc..). It may be necessary
to uninstall the Touchpad software and use the native drivers in XP.

Thanks for quick response...my loyalty to MS support is restored.
However.....i also thought there may be a conflict between the TP and the
mouse.
But...device manager only shows the PS/2 mouse...and keyboard doesn;t show
anything specific to the TP...so I can;t see how to disable or uninstall the
TP.
Add/remove programs also doesn't show the TP...so I'm damned if I know where
the little devil is...
Incidentally (looking at other posts) I've thoroughly cleaned both mouses
I've tried (with cotton tip and acetone)
so no probs there.
I'm using a sony VAIO. It's old (I'm actually fixing it up for a friend in
my village - her son gave it to her ...she's 85 and wants to 'surf the
net'...:))))) Anyway - her fingers aren't too good on the TP so she needs
the mouse.
I've also downloaded a new driver ...still no difference.
You can see what I mean about life draining away...must have spent 3 hours
so far on this...and achieved nothing.

Also, Open Device Manager, Click View - tic/check "Show Hidden
Devices". Check Mice/Keyboard category for phantoms, Devices
previously installed/used but not currently connected in the hardware
profile. If I read your previous post correctly, you might look in the
"Human Interface Devices" category as well. This is where USB mice
get their interface driver loaded. (Remove/Uninstall the Phantoms)
You should also check Sony's web-site for your model. BIOS updates
sometimes address hardware issues like these. I would recommend
you read the update or Readme.Txt files that list fixes/patches in the
BIOS code and look for any mention of Touchpad/Mice issues.

OK. I did check for Human Interfaces devices - it wasn't listed on device
manager...so I assume there aren't any installed.
I'll try the other stuff you suggest...tomorrow.....it's time for bed here
in the UK, and I'm the better for a few glasses of wine, so I'll do it in the
morning. Please check my post when you get on-line tomorrow .
i really appreciate you help.

Tried everything you suggested including downloading driver from SONY - no
better. Funnily enough, if I leave the mouse unplugged during startup, and
then plug it in after a few minutes, it's fine.
Wondered if I can disable the Touchpad ? Can't find it anywhere on device
manager.
Any help much appreciated.
