proxy server

I am a home user with window xp. What is a proxy server and how do I acquire
one. Are there free proxy servers? I went on a website and it had my ip
address and my web browser displayed. It also had a statement that "I see
stupid people."
Am I stupid for not hiding my ip address. Any help on this matter will be
appreciated. charliedean47

Your IP address and browser version will always be visible ...and this is
nothing to worry about, really. Do you have your firewall enabled? You might
consider getting a cheapo broadband firewall/router device to do NAT and add
another layer of protection...

Proxy server info -

You don't have one, and you likely won't ever have one or see one on a home
computer/network.

Nothing you do on the Internet is truly anonymouse, but just because someone
knows your public IP and what version of IE you run doesn't mean much.

Yes, my web server collects that information on all visitors, and it is not
something to really loose sleep over. UNLESS you are not protecting yourself
with perimeter firewalls, nat devices, etc.

If you wish to use a Proxy server, there are many available. For instance,
here is a list of public proxies that are available for your use:
