Property boxes disappearing!!!

I'm hoping someone can help me. Recently, I've noticed an odd problem
with my installation of windows XP. It seems that whenever I open a
program wizard (or mostly any window involving a pre-installed OS
program) the wizard will stay open for a few seconds, and then
completely disappears. For example, I was attempting to sign on to
windows messenger for the first time. When I clicked on "Click here to
sign in", the wizard for setting up my passport shows up, gives me
enough time to click "Next" and then disappears. The same thing happens
for the uninstall wizard with most programs. I opened up the task
manager to see what processes are running, and tried a wizard again.
The process for the wizard shows up in task manager, and then
disappears, so it seems that the wizards aren't just disappearing, but
shutting down on their own. Anyone have any ideas????

First, what is the malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it
is clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?
