projector won't work on desk top

I am trying to set
up a dell 2400mp projector on my desktop running windows xp professional
with no success so far. We
just bought it primarily for presentations by our safety guy with his
laptop which I've got it going on that. The laptop has an extra key named
"Fn" which desktops don't have. You have to press that key and the "F8"
keys at the same time to get the laptop to sync with the projector, but so
far I
haven't found out how to get the desktop to work with it. The vga cable is
plugged into the pigtail that splits out of the video card, the other side
going to his monitor, but can you tell me what combination of keys to get
this to work or am I out of luck?

Thanks for any help

Any projector that I have use on desktops needs video cable running from card to projector and then
from projector to the monitor. Plug the vga cable from the monitor into the port on back of
projector. The projector and monitor will show same picture.

You have to set the desktop video to something the projector
understands. Try 800x600 16bit for starters.

What happens if you plug the projector directly into the desktop, without
the pigtail?

If that works then your pigtail (a "Y" adapter?) might be bad, or your video
card can't handle two devices at the same time, or the projector can't
handle the monitor on the line at the same time.

If removing the pigtail doesn't work then the projector isn't set up
properly.
