Can anyone direct me to a web site which explains in
plain English what all the processes running on my
computer REALLY do .... and how to end some of those
processes, once and for all?
I have a Dell XP Home computer. Tons of SDRAM (768 MB),
an 80 GB hard drive (only 2 GB used because it's pretty
new), and have installed and am running Ad-Aware, SpyBot,
and Norton Internet Security and Norton System Works. I
keep the anti-virus and internet security up to date,
usually daily. As far as I can tell, my computer is virus
free.
So what's the problem? My system is running slower and
slower, especially when shutting down. I asked a
computer knowledgeable friend; he found I have 38 (!!!)
processes running. None of these show up on MSCONFIG.
He highlighted and ended some of the processes, but the
next time I restarted my computer, they were all back!
I suspect that some of these processes are nice but
unnecessary and may be the reason my wonderful new
computer is dragging.
Any assistance is gratefully appreciated!
