Programs running in background clogging up cpu resources

The computer seems to be running very slow, primarily when playing games. Looking at the cpu usage meter, one or two programs running are using 40-50% of the resources each and inhibit other programs from functioning normally. I have no idea how this started or even what these programs are doing. What to do? Where is this coming from? How do I stop this maddening progcess?
