Programs only work as Administrator

J

John Chauvin

I am using a stand alone version of Windows 2000 (SP3) and am
encountering increasing stability problems. I use DSL to access the
internet.

1. My userid is frequently lockout by the operating system for no
apparent reason. I have to logon as Administrator and unlock my
userid.

2. More and more programs will only run as Administrator or will run
but are unstable.

I have used Norton SystemWorks to check my disk and operating system.
The only thing that Norton detects is a problem with the security
descriptors which Norton has been unable to fix. I keep Norton
Anti-Virus updated and run weekly scans.

The bottom line is everything seems to work as expected only when I am
login as
Administrator. It appears there is some permission problem with my
local user id. I tried creating a new local user id but the same
problem were still there.

Any ideas what is going on?

Thanks,

John C.

Hello Jchauvin,
1. You're not giving us enought infromation to resolve your issue.
2. What exactly is unstable? Error messages? Event log errors?
3. What applications are you running during these failures?
4. The only way an account can be locked out is if the account issue
enough bad passwords to trigger the account lockupt threshold you've
configured. What is that threshold and who is sending bad passwords from
that account?
5. What is the security descriptors problem that Norton is hung up on?
6. Have you made any changes to the "Default Users" directory?
7. How long has thei problem been in effect?
8. Have you considered installing SP4?
A. if you system is a victim of a trojan attack, Norton will not catch that.
B. If you don't have firewall software installed, you should strongly
consider installing it. See zonealarm or blackice
C. You may want to confirm that no changes were made to the permissions on
the files system also.
