Programs not accessing registry?! Please advise!

Hi,
About a week ago, I started running into problems with a number o
programs not saving settings. Any idea what is going on? Here's wha
I've got:

Firefox keeps trying to save passwords despite my trying to disable th
feature.

Callburner keeps running in free mode despite my saving the access key
It also keeps running at startup, despite my disabling this.

Activewords also keeps running at startup, but cannot access it'
database and freezes up.

Bitdefender runs, but now no longer will run either manual or schedule
system scans.

I'm sure I'm missing a few. What is going on here?! Any thoughts woul
be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the welcome!
I'm running BitDefender. It's been running scans several times a wee
since I had the machine. But now it won't scan. I ran the Windows Vist
scan and it didn't come up with anything.
