programs keeps adding itself to the startup on launching

Their are few programs that keep adding themselves to the
start up on launching them. They are quick time player
and real player. They add their auto update and messaging
to the start up. I removed their folders from the
msconfing registery and removed them startup on
HMLK/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run
but obviously their is a command that adds the startup
registry key when I run these programs. Does anyone know
how to find this command or registry key and delete it?

The best way to stop a program from starting up is from within the
program itself.
Contrary to what many say, MSCONFIG Startup is not a good place for
this very reason.
Some applications will recreate those entries if the entries are
deleted.
Go to the program itself and look for something like "Load at
startup", "Start at boot" etc.,
Disable it from the application.

MSCONFIG Startup is intended as a troubleshooting tool and as a method
of permanently disabling an application from starting.

Unfortunately this decent behaviour does not apply to these specific
programs. They do not give you the option to not load at startup. The main
reason is becuse these programs want to launch unsolicited ads albeit rarely
(everyday/everyweek/every15 days etc).

Even if you delete the startup module, it gets reinstalled next time you run
the main application.

Solution:
My solution is to disable the startup programs by NTFS permissions:
1. Do not remove it from startup, (let the application think everything is
hunky dory)
2. Identify and locate the startup modules. (Hint: Use Autoruns from
SysInternals)
3. Modify NTFS security settings and remove all read and write permissions
(Note be careful here, do it in advanced dialog leaving these permission
Allowed: "Take ownership/change permission/write attribute")

This way these modules wont be able to run and overwritten.

Unfortunately this method is way off base - the programs the OP is speaking
of does have a checkbox to "Start with Windows" - also, it you disable the
program from starting via permissions, then how is the OP going to use the
program when he/she really needs to use it? Struggle through changing the
permissions back??? I see a little overkill here.

Hi Star

I am not sure why you objected to my solution. Either you do not understand
the problem or have some other confusion.

Please read the original post again, the poster did mention the names of the
programs which keep adding _their_modules_ to the startup. These do _not_
have a check box to "Start with Windows".

If you have not observed yourself then please note that:

1. RealPlayer and QuickTime do not add themselves as startup programs.

2. RealPlayer adds this module to startup:
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe"

3. QuickTime Player adds this:
"C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe"

According to my own personal experience, neither of the programs get badly
affected by disabling these modules; their main applications (which are
completely independent modules) can run on their own.

If you have some other solution that you have tried "yourself", please share
with us.

Search and install RegCleaner. It has a built in setting for removing unwanted programs like that from starting without stopping them from working. Run the RegCleaner too to remove old crap from registry to help with cleaner running machine. Have a rainbow day. :)
