Programs Don't Run

Greetings,

I am new to XP. I recently migrated from 98 to xp. Now I have two programs
now that won't 'run'.

The first is Quickbooks 2003 Pro. This ran fine up until I allowed that
wretched 'windows update' to download and install in the background
yesterday. After that, when I try to start QB, it generates the warning:
"This version of Quickbooks requires MS IE6.0 or later. Install IE 6.0 from
the QB CD-Rom..." I tried to install the version from the CD, but of course
that didn't work. Intuit (QB OEM) was no help, and they charge for 'all
technical help', imagine that. [they have seen the last penny from me!].
It appears to be a protection or a version problem, but I don't have a clue
how to proceed. Any Ideas?

The second issue is L&H speech software. This I received with my
Plantronics head set, to use as a dictation tool. The overall speech
recognition with Office works, but the L&H software (a stand alone pkg that
came bundled with the headset) generates an error that the program 'cannot
establish a share file'(?), then it dies. I suspect these are both due to
the migration to XP, and that it is my set up of XP that is causing the
dificulties, but, again, I have not clue how to continue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Brich,
It appears that removing the programs and running a fresh install of both,
then getting their updates (if any) might be the best way out of the fix. An
alternative would be to remove the Windows updates that have been installed,
tho I would caution about yanking any out that were critical.

Thanks for the help. I tried the changing the compatibility to 98/ME, but
that didn't help. I have reloaded several times, to no avail.

The program ran in xp up until the win update, so I don't think the problem
is with QB per se. The symptom is that it cannot 'find' IE6.0. Is there
some protection within newer win or ie version that mask IE6 somehow? Also,
QB automatically looks for its own updates and uses IE-like views; and
apparently it won't start without it. I might look for a QB update on
their site. Unfortunately, they try to control that from within the
program, and I
can't 'start' the prog.... it may be a catch 22. We'll see....

I also am reluctant to fiddle with win updates, but my next step may lie in
that direction. I shall have to check on the updates and see just how they
work.

Thanks again for the info though!
