Program won't part 3

Papa John,
I don't mean to be a pain in the ass, but you know a lot more than I do
about this program. First of all I opened up the DLL files with notepad.exe
and found that some of them are for Movie Maker 2.1. Since I tried to
install 2.0 I guess I have screwed up the registry. Let me ask you, do you
know what the file heirarchy is for the 2.0 program. I am really
apprehensive about installing Service Pack2 on top of itself. Usually when
you do this things start going wrong. I know your site explains how to
correct some problems, but it seems to bring me back in circles since it
doesn't really explain my problem. Your site explains more for MM1 to MM2,
not MM2 to MM2.1. I also did that copy and paste from the registered
packages folder but it still doesn't work. One more question. How do you
register the DLL files? I am not that hep on doing that and how can I delete
everything out of the movie maker folder without it saying that it is part of
the operating system?

Thanks much.

If you installed SP2 to get to MM2.1, and then installed a standalone 2.0
package, your automatic file replacements should be coming from the SP2
software.

Try deleting the key files (exe and DLLs) in the Movie Maker folder... they
should get refreshed with new copies. Compare what you get to the files
listed on my MM2.1 page.

Then register the DLLs, copying and pasting the command line as it says on
my page.

I don't know the file hierarchy for Movie Maker... when I was beta testing a
new version of Movie Maker, I'd create another folder with the beta files in
it, without touching the files in the regular folder.... and run the
registration commands for each of the DLLs in the folder I wanted to use. I
made a batch file and put it in each folder to more easily run down them
all... but for a one shot effort, doing each one manually is easy enough.
I'd go back and forth between the regular and beta versions that way...

Papa John, I checked the dll's in the main folder. they are all for movie
maker 2.1. I also have the moviemk.exe version 2.1. I checked the registry
and movie maker is still listed, but I used the version 2.0 msi file to
uninstall. So from what I can figure, 2.0 is no longer installed. But I
don't know if 2.1 is installed either since it doesn't show up in add/remove
programs as being part of the operating system.
I don't know. I give up. LOL. If you have anything to add to this for me
I appreciate it. If not, thanks for your time.

thanks. I checked the registered packages folder and what is strange is that
the 2.0 EXE is in there and not the 2.1 exe. I did a right click on it and
checked the properties of the file and it showed the compatability option tab
which means it's not part of the windows operating system. This is all
screwed up. I replaced the moviemk.exe in the movie maker folder with the
2.1 exe and registered those 5 dll's. It still won't start. I have a
feeling that the person who sent me the zip files with the dll's told me to
put some of them in the wrong folders. I will change things around and see
what happens. Thanks so much for your help. Take care.
