Program will not uninstall

If I am in wrong group, please tell me where to go:

I have a program (MyAlert) that suddenly stopped working. I tried to
UNINSTALL it so I could reinstall.

It will not UNINSTALL - I get the message "Error 1606. Could not access
network location %USERPROFILE%\RECENT\" .

If I try to INSTALL the program (I thought maybe it would install over the
old program) I get the message "Fatal error during installation".

Can some one please tell me how to get rid of the corrupted program? I am
running XP Home on a Dell Inspiron 6000.

By the way, I have run Registry First Aid, and thought that it had deleted
all the references to "MyAlert". Apparently not so.

Thanks a million,

If you run that 'registry cleaner' periodically - it may have *caused* the
initial issue...

What do the creators/support for the "MyAlert" applications tell you?

Thanks for the response, Shenan,

I checked with them. I got the following message yesterday from the
developer:

Hi Chuck,I assume that you are running Windows XP or Vista. When you
installed the program originally, Microsoft always registers the application
in your registry. If you cannot find the application in the Control panel,
then your printer software possibly bombed your registry. Try to download a
registry repair program from the internet like PC's Registry Mechanic and
that program will either repair or remove left-over code.
Good luck,
Rolf

By the way, the program DOES appear in the Control panel (Add or Remove
Programs), and that is where I attempted to UNINSTALL it, several times,
always with the same error message.

In addition to what Shenan suggested, if all else fails, you could consider
rolling back to an earlier restore point, by using System Restore to
(likely) get you out of this jam.

Of course, everything installed since then would be effectively
uninstalled - keep that in mind. And stay away from the registry
cleaners.

Error 1606: Could not access network location
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/msi1606.htm

<quote>

Symptom:
When you attempt to install an application which uses Windows Installer, you may
encounter the following error:

Error 1606 Could not access network location %USERPROFILE%\RECENT\
Resolution

This may happen due to incorrect registry value type for Recent, in the following
key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurentVersion \ Explorer \ User
Shell Folders

Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe
Navigate to the above location
In the right-pane, double-click Recent and set its data to:

%Userprofile%\Recent

Important: The Value type must be of REG_EXPAND_SZ type. If it is of REG_SZ type,
delete the value, and then create a new value of the correct type.

Close Regedit.exe and restart Windows.

Thanks, glee:

I followed the instructions you made available, and the value type in my
registry is "REG_SZ type".

Pardon my inexperience (and I am very nervous messing with the registry),
but how do I edit it or make a new entry. I can create a new "RECENT"
entry, but can't figure out how to get the Value type "REG_EXPAND_SZ" typed
in.

I tried Google and couldn't find the answer.

Thanks.

Never mind (concerning my request on unread message). I figured out how to
correct the faulty registry key and everything is now working fine.

Thanks a million for the information!
