"program too big to fit in memory"

Hello.I recently got this bad problem in my computer
where i try to open certain programs and nothing happens
except a black box pops on the screen and then dissapears
in a split second.When it stays open long enough it
usually says "program too big to fit in memory." I have
no idea why this is happening.I have norton antivirus and
i ran a full system scan to delete viruses,but the
problem still continues.And I have over half of my hard
drive with free space so there is obviously enough memory
to start these programs up.If anyone has ANY answers to

Having space on your hard drive doesn't mean you should
have enough memory.
