Program removal.

Just discovered this site, what a resource!

I've used Quicken off and on for the last few years...more off than on. I
want to remove the program and then re-install so that I may start all over
again with the program from square one.

I tried to remove the program in the "Add or Remove Program" from the
control panel, but there was no file/folder/program listed. When I did a
Quicken file/folder "search" I found many files/folders. I deleted these
once, did a second search and found the files/folders again. I deleted these
AGAIN, did a third search and found nothing - they appeared to be gone.

Does this mean that all evidence of Quicken has been removed completely from
my computer and I am safe to reload it? My concern is that I want to start
completely over with Quicken and I don't want my computer to think that there
is Quicken related info already there.

No. All you did was remove the destination folder ... nothing in the
Windows Registry was removed.
So you probably have remnants under:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Quicken
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Intuit
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Quicken
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Intuit

as well as all the support DLLS under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Classes,
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Clsid

I would check the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE keys above and if present, rename
Quicken (or Intuit) to something else.

When you looked under Add/Remove, did you look for Intuit ....?

I would also run Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and see if Quicken shows
there ... if so, select it and have Cleanup Utility remove the entry.

If you don't have Windows Installer Clenup Utility, download it and run it.

Once you do re-install, make sure you re-install to the same destination
folder (remove any remnants first).

You also have to make sure that none of the Quicken services are on.
Administrative Tools, services. Stop and then disable them.

Also get rid of all registry entries.

I have gone to component services in Adminstrative Tools and found nothing
refering to Quicken, so can I assume that those services are off and need not
be disabled? How do I get rid of the registry entries?

It would be almost impossible to manually remove a program like Quicken. Your best strategy to get back to a pristine install would be to re-install Quicken, which is what you should have done in the first place. This will add all of the uninstall information in Add or Remove programs and then perform a complete uninstall.

After this is completed, then reinstall.

You didn't have to deinstall or erase anything regarding Quicken itself.
Starting fresh means new data files, not the program itself. All you had to
do is remove the default data files in quicken with windows explorer.
Quicken would prompt you and start anew when you opened it again. You can
also start anew without resorting to that method within Quicken. But, that
poses a problem if you choose the wrong database filename to save to media
or restore, the wrong name may be the former database in the same folder.
This is a Quicken question not XP.

Simply put, Quicken is like a custom version of Excel. All the
adds/subtracts and so forth are already setup for you instead. Its still a
database handling system. You don't deinstall Excel if you don't want to
open any past made Excel files.

To use Quicken properly, especially day to day account changes like a
personal checking account, these must be documented within Quicken as you
go. Not when you get around to it in a few weeks or months.

Credit worthiness note. Those banks providing debit/credit revolving
accounts also used as an ATM card. Usage of debit or credit is same per
some credit tracking agencies using this type of card. Another words, if
you debit alot with the card for day to day expenses, its the same as using
the revolving credit. High use is a negative for credit worthiness. Use
cash instead. This may change tomorrow, but don't blame me.

Why? That should be entirely unnecessary. You should simply delete the
Quicken data files to start all over.

It's very hard to tell from the above exactly what you've done, but I
recommend that you reinstall Quicken. When you start it, see if it finds any
data files and picks up from where it left off. If it doesn't shut down
Quicken and delete the data files.

are located because, although I'm a Quicken user, it's on my desktop at

Wise not to answer the filename question regarding quicken data files. They
may change, or add more, as the newer the version is.
2003 version: Q3.dir, qdata.qdf, qdata.qel, qdata.qph, qdata.qsd. Or
qdata.* and q3.dir for copying, moving, or deleting. All under the Quicken
subdirectory.
There's a way of gleaning prior transactions, and starting at newer date.
By the time all is said and done, might as well start over clean. One can
archive within quicken before doing this.
